Pray for the Haiti Earthquake Victims and Relief Workers

January 15, 2010

Since the Haiti earthquake occurred, many of my International Ministries colleagues have worked day and night to assess the situation, to contact our partners in Haiti, and to organize relief and fund-raising. Please remember especially Lisa Rothenberger, ABC World Relief Officer, and Rev. Jose Norat, Area Director who handles our work in Haiti.

Also although our missionaries are safe, yesterday we were still not able to get in touch with several officers of our partner churches and relief organizations who were in Haiti when the earthquake took place. Praise God that early this morning we learned that “Rick, Sarla, Ann, Sam Dixon and 2 others from UMCOR were pulled out the rubble of Hotel Montana this evening!”.

“They had been trapped in a pocket in the lobby created by 2 pillars. They are fine. They are being sent by helicopter to the embassy and then will be evacuated from there. All of our staff haven't been notified yet - but given the time difference, I wanted you to have the news! Apparently Sarla was on ABC nightline....the report on line says she was doing well and was eating a cookie as they were pulling the others out! I just talked to Silvana, Rick's wife, and USAID had allowed Rick to use a Sat phone to call her. She said "Rick sounded just like Rick" and was doing very well. It is a miracle and we are praising God for his goodness and his grace.” Our Interchurch Medical Associates (IMA) Dana McDonald told us.

Unfortunately, we learn that a local pastor Rev. Biene Lamerique was killed in the quake. IM missionaries Steve and Nancy James and local Haitian Christians are searching for the survivors and provide their help.
