Love Crosses Land and Sea
Benjamin Chan
April 22, 2008
"Ben, we received your email about the snowstorm in China, but some of us have little knowledge of how extensively the snowstorm has affected ten and thousands of struggling Chinese farmers. Would you prepare a prayer newsletter for our members?" The newsletter was prepared and distributed to the four congregations of the Chinese Christian Church and Center in Philadelphia. In three weeks time, the church raised $5,487 towards the relief. "Here in Philadelphia, we share the love and salvation of Jesus Christ with Chinese from Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Southeast Asia and other parts of the world. We want to reach out to the people of our home country with the same amazing love pf God." said Rev. Leslie Leung, pastor of the Cantonese speaking congregation.
The ministry of the Chinese Christian Church and Center in Philadelphia was started by five denominations in 1942 including the American Baptist Churches. The church has become financially independent in 1985. Since then, the ministry has expanded to include a community service center, and four Sunday services (Cantonese, Mandarin, and English) in three locations. In additional to the snowstorm relief, the church has supported Benjamin Chan's (Area Director of East Asia and India) service with the International Ministries, the "AIDS" orphan and village clinic programs in China. In year 2005, the church contributed $11,378 towards the Tsunami relief and $6,815 towards Katrina relief. The church holds a Mission Sunday in April and a Mission Conference in October each year. The keynote speaker of the upcoming conference on October 18 and 19 will be Rev. Walt White, International Ministries Global Consultant on Ministry with major historical religions.
